CELTA Teacher Training Courses

The Cambridge ESOL CELTA is one of the most prestigious and widely recognised international professional English Language Teaching (ELT) qualifications worldwide. Whether you’re new to the world of TEFL or you’re looking to increase or add to your TEFL qualifications and experience, CELTA is highly recommended due to its widespread acceptance by employers of English language teachers.

CELTA is so highly regarded due to the great importance that is attached to quality control. This is assured in a number of ways, including Cambridge approval and moderation. Our trainers offer advice on everything from initial decisions on taking the course to how to find a job once you have qualified.

The training centre is located within our English language school with students from around the world. This means that trainees can experience life in a real school environment and are surrounded by real English language learners.

The course is run as a four-week demanding but stimulating intensive course and as a six-month part-time course over twenty weeks.

To join the CELTA teacher training course you must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum level of education equivalent to university entrance. You should be a native English speaker or have an equivalent standard of written and spoken English. You don’t need previous teaching experience, though some applicants will be qualified teachers who want a change of career direction.

The school can arrange accommodation with host families or in the school residence.

The CELTA course:

- is designed for native and near-native speakers of English with little or no experience of ELT;
  - gives you an extremely practical introduction to the theory and methodology of English Language Teaching;
- teaches you the principles of effective teaching;
- want gives you a range of practical skills for teaching;
- gives you hands on teaching experience;
- builds your confidence

You should take the course if you:

- are starting a career in English Language Teaching;
  - have been teaching English Language, but don't have a formal qualification;
- are looking to have a career break or change;
- want to teach English as a foreign language abroad

What does the course involve?

The course includes practical demonstrations and workshops during which you will discover new ways of teaching English and experience a wide range of activities, materials and tasks that will help your students communicate in English.

The course consists of 120 contact hours which is made up of the following:

Input sessions
Teaching Practice - with volunteer students
Supervised lesson planning
Feedback on teaching practice
Peer observation of teaching practice
  Observation of experienced teachers
Tutorials
  Four written assignments
Cambridge also recommends a further 120 hours of self-study time (background reading, assignment writing, lesson preparation, etc.)

Coursework and teaching are internally assessed and externally moderated by Cambridge ESOL.

There are five main units of learning:

1. Learners and teachers, and teaching and learning content - educational backgrounds and traditions of learners, motivations, different learning styles.
2. Language analysis and awareness - how English works, basic concepts and terms used to describe form and meaning in language and language use, language skills, and syllabus design.
3. Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing.
4. Planning and resources for different contexts - selecting and adapting materials for learning activities and tasks, selection, use and evaluation of commercial and non-published resources.
5. Developing teaching skills and professionalism - self assessment of strengths and weaknesses, working as teacher, colleague, employer.

The course is intensive, and requires a full-time commitment.

There are 2 components of the course assessment:  Teaching practice and  Written Assignments

There is no final examination. Assessment is based on your performance throughout the course and is continuous i.e. throughout the course) and integrated (all components count towards the final grade). To be awarded the certificate your must pass both components. An external assessor appointed by Cambridge ESOL, moderates each course.

! Grading is based on continuous assessment and you will receive continuous oral and written feedback.  ! There will be regular teaching practice sessions in which you and your colleagues will observe each other teaching bona fide students. The sessions will also be observed and assessed by one of your course tutors and followed by feedback you will discuss each other’s teaching. Your tutor will also contribute.
! Honesty, sensitivity and tact will be needed at all times. You will also need to be able to listen to evaluations of your teaching, suggestions and advice in a constructive manner.
! You will need to be able to work well in a group, and to be co-operative and supportive at all times. Inability to operate well in pairwork and groupwork may hinder your progress. Similarly, you will also need to be able to work independently.
! There are four assessed, written assignments to complete within deadlines spread throughout the course.
! You are required to teach for a total of six hours and to observe experienced teachers (live and on video) for a minimum of six hours. (For the part time course, these observations will be held outside the scheduled timetable by arrangement).
! One hundred per cent attendance is required. Only under exceptional circumstances are candidates permitted to be absent. Cambridge ESOL will not issue a Certificate if attendance is below eighty per cent. This regulation  is applied whatever the reason for absence. If you withdraw from the course at any point, we regret that you will not be eligible for a refund for either part or whole of the course.

COURSE STRUCTURE:
4 weeks intensive: Monday to Friday
Time: 8.30am – 5.30pm (variable)
Workshops and seminars will be held during the afternoons.
  The mornings will consist of teaching practice, teaching practice preparation and feedback and tutorials

The application process:

If you are interested in applying for the course please you may compleet an application form

Once we have received your application form, we will then decide whether it is appropriate to proceed to the next stage of the application process.

As preparation for the interview we will ask you to complete a pre-interview task. This will consist of several tasks to help us to ascertain your fluency in spoken and written English and your current knowledge and perception of how English works. These tasks will take approximately 90 minutes to complete. During the interview we will talk about what you should expect on the course in as much detail as possible, ask you to perform a short teaching-related task, discuss the answers to your written pre-interview tasks and allow you the opportunity to ask any questions and/or discuss any concerns you may have. This last part of the pre-interview procedure may be conducted in a group with other applicants. Your team-working and communication skills will also be assessed.

If you are unable to attend a face-to-face interview, we will need to hold a telephone or Skype interview.
